The latest album by South African band Watershed was produced together with UK outfit James. The idea was to make Watershed sound more progressive. To some degree, the collaboration is a success. Track 4 “Close my eyes” reminds of Coldplay. It’s a pity that the hit single “Live another day” is the opener - no other track on the album is able to come close to it. Mosaic lives up to its name: a mix of different tunes that certainly deserve a second or third listen to work their way in. Not as good as their last album.

Not a new CD this one, but we haven’t reviewed this since we started with our online review section. And there’s never been a better time to review Mosaic, Watershed’s third studio album. As you might have heard by now, Watershed’s ‘Simple Explanation’ Tour has kicked off at Barnyard Theatres in South Africa. 15 shows will be held at participating Barnyard theatres around the country including Cresta, Broadacres, Menlyn and White River.

Fans can expect Craig, Graham, Hodge, Lizzie, Nick and Tulsa performing new arrangements of certain classic songs, to the rocking versions of old favourites, to the material from this album, all set within a carefully crafted ‘living room’ set. But back to Mosaic… with 3 hit singles already lifted from this album, it seems South Africans just cannot get enough of this band. For quite a while “Indigo Girl,” has been the signature Watershed song. But I must be honest, the second single released from Mosaic, “Letters,” has the power to knock Indigo Girl from that coveted position as the best Watershed track. “Close my Eyes” is also fast becoming a standout track, being helped along by being used in a medical aid TV commercial.

The sound of this album is intimate… as if it’s made for a close group of friends… and that sums up Watershed’s approach to music, their fans and indeed the tour… Craig Hinds, lead singer has this to say about the whole idea behind the tour: “Simple Explanation’ is a lyric taken from our song ‘Far Away’ off the Mosaic album. With this tour we’ll be bringing the audience closer to the music, giving insight to the meaning of the songs, the how, why and where… a bit of story telling and some simple explanations from us to our fans.”

If you can name only one, maybe two Watershed songs (before reading all of this), this album will introduce you to a band who has an incredible passion for music. It’s an album what will make you wonder why you’ve not bought a Watershed album before. But if you have all of their albums, and thousands of local fans do, it offers a Simple Explanation as to why Watershed can rightfully be crowned South Africa’s top band at the moment. Now go see them live.
