Though it's a close race, the duo make for better DJs than producers, as witnessed by their volume in the DJ Kicks series. Beginning with downbeat trip-hop including Herbaliser, Statik Sound System and Thievery Corporation, Kruder & Dorfmeister flow through jazzy drum'n'bass (with Aquasky and JMJ & Flytronix) and techno (with Hardfloor and Showroom Recordings). K&D sound much more relaxed and involved than on their own G-Stoned EP.

Austrians Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister, whose smooth and sexy acid jazz has attracted almost as much attention as their curious resemblance to American folksters Simon and Garfunkel, demonstrate their skills on yet another installment of Studio K7's DJ Kicks series. The mix highlights the best of European trip-hop, acid jazz, and drum and bass, with their own "High Noon" and "Black Baby" mixed with tracks from British trip-hoppers Herbalizer, German technicians Hardfloor, and Viennese weirdo Patrick Pulsinger, among others. Their straightforward mixing is complemented by a heavy dose of studio postproduction but the emphasis here is on track selection rather than technical trickery. Like their productions, this DJ Kicks is classy, sophisticated, and surprising.

Included in AP's "10 Essential DJ-Mix Albums" - "...This is perfect stoned head-nodding music for late nights and early-morning come-downs.

Alternative Press (10/00, p.120)

...Suddenly the ground drops out from beneath your expectations, and your ears start to bug on Thievery Corporation's understated soul, K&D's own trip-hop vibe, Beanfield's funky workout, Rockers Hi-Fi's acoustic EU-beat and Shantel's diggedy dub jazz...

Option (11-12/96, p.115)

** Klang.: 08-09

Austrian producers Kruder & Dorfmeister have been toiling away at the edges of the increasingly popular sb-mo jazz beatz (or whatever) "scene" for a good while. Their G-Stone label has been wowing acid jazz fans for some time, and the pair are also accomplished DJs, spinning an eclectic mixture of headz jazz, drum-and-bass and straightforward acid jazz. Their turntable skills are put to the test on this full-length mix, which constitutes the latest installment in the laudable DJ Kicks series from the German K7 label. The series is devoted to ushering highly regarded dance producers (including, so far, Carl Craig and Claude Young) into the studio to display their spinning skills. Kruder & Dorfmeister whip together a superb melange of extra-curricular beats and rhythms, moving from the slow burning funk of Small World's "Livin' Free" and Herbalizer's "A Mother" to the racing percussive acrobatics of JMJ & Flytronix and Aquasky, both culled from the Moving Shadow label. The mix then moves into slo-mo breakbeat terrain with tracks by Thievery Corporation, Birmingham's Rockers Hi-Fi and surreal Viennese electronic funksters Showroom Recordings (a k a Patrick Pulsinger).
