Limited edition two disc (CD + PAL/Region 0 DVD) pressing of talcum. 2007 release from the Godfather of Electronica, who mixes modern technology with melodic flair, creating a sound that is soothing yet full of life and experimentation. 13 sounds capes including 'Partners In Crime', 'Fresh News and 'Beautiful Agony'. Atlantic.

Electro pioneer Jean Michel Jarre's fourteenth studio albumis the follow up to 2003's 'Geometry Of Love.' A concept album, 'Teo And Tea' tells the story of a day in the life of two cartoon characters who meet and fall in love. Described as the prolific composer's most ambitious album to date, 'TeoAnd Tea' expands on Jarre's techno roots to offer up a musical journey incorporating a vast array of moods and genres.

French electronic music guru Jean Michel Jarre returns to recording after a seven-year studio hiatus. Many have accused Jarre of being in a musical rut since the '90s, but as evidenced by Téo and Téa, he may be retro but he's far from tired. This album includes the bad-ass title track single that has been taking over dancefloors in Europe since the end of 2006; its four on the floor house rhythm is shaded and textured with all manner of narrated voices, programmed analog synths, polythrythms and all manner of slamming, over the top house. Its cheesy sounds blend seamlessly with the more substantive ones. Jarre collaborates with string arranger and guitarist Claude Samard who also uses all manner of digital equipment to get delays on orchestral textures and sonically enhanced analog sounds to behave. Francis Rimbert also plays keyboards, and Tim Hufekn and Anne Parillaud Jarre contributes suitable moans and other signing sounds to "Beautiful Agony." Right, you're getting it. This is not meant to be some new form of classical electronic soundscape; it's designed for the Euro upscale club circuit and it works like a charm. There are any number of tracks, including the two aforementioned, that qualify for extensive remix treatment. "Touch to Remember," with its computerized sci-fi vocal samples, is more constitutionally Jarre, but there is that subtle breakbeat to bring it up to date with all the whizzing, drifting keyboards and sequenced, keyboard-programmed rhythmic loops. "Partners In Crime, Pt. 1" and "Pt. 2" are a mirrored pairing of each other, one fully orchestrated, one a kind of dub version, both with corrosive breaks. "Melancholic Rodeo," and "Téo & Téa 4: 00 A.M." close the album out on a high note with strange, shimmering backdrops, trancelike beats and angular synth lines with an 808 slipping around the backdrop of each lending that beautifully cold retro feel. The former contains a treated guitar solo that carries the track into its territory on this set and makes it indispensable; it's a multi-layered near-rock moment that is covered over in sheets of sound and rhythms that take it radically out of context. There are a pair of brief throwaways acting as segues that mar the album's surface, when the final shattering angular house remix of the title track goes out on an extended high note, there's nothing left to do but gasp in pleasure. Téo and Téa is a better recording that we had any right to expect, Europhiles will be ecstatically happy; Amerikanski's may find a kind of kitschy pleasure in most of it, but it's a winner nonetheless. [The album was also released with a bonus DVD.]

Thom Jurek - All Music Guide

ELECTRONIC pioneer Jean Michel Jarre returns with another ambitious concept album in the form of Teo & Tea, a boy-meets-girl story for a modern age that mixes sensual dance music with a narrative element. The album marks Jarre’s first album since 2004’s acclaimed Aero and continues to stretch the innovator – albeit with varying degrees of success. Jarre has, of course, been plying his trade since 1976 and the release of his seminal Oxygene debut which sold 12 million copies and remains unparalleled in French history. In total, Jarre’s music has sold 60 million albums world-wide. But it’s not just his music that seeks to push boundaries – as the artist is equally renowned for his live shows, including a post-Mao concert in China in the ’80s. Indeed, Jarre has broken his own entry in the Guinness Book of Records for the largest attendance at a concert on three occasions. One can only imagine what he will do when he takes Teo & Tea on the road. What’s most impressive about the album, however, is just how contemporary it sounds. Jarre, like all the best survivalists and innovators, knows how to refine his sound to appeal to all generations, whilst remaining careful to remain true to his roots. On several occasions, you can tell it’s Jarre if you’ve listened to any of his back catalogue – and yet newcomers will still think there’s material here to sit comfortably alongside some of the biggest names on the Ibiza club scene (Gossip, for instance, or the title track itself). And in spite of its narrative approach, the album maintains a consistent level of energy that’s perfectly tailored for dancefloor appeal. Teo & Tea is incredibly lively and sets the tone for the tracks that follow. It’s just that if you pine for the cinematic scope of Jarre’s music, or the more atmospheric, there’s not much here to satisfy. Tracks like Beautiful Agony are geared towards the younger generation and drop tantalising sex sounds along the way, while OK, Do It Fast are as pumped up as their name suggests. It’s thrilling stuff at times – but not as diverse as some of Jarre’s work. Of the highlights, Partners in Crime 1 & 2 do, at least, slow down the pace and assume a cinematic quality more in keeping with the score of a 007 or Jason Bourne soundtrack, while Touch To Remember is a particular stand-out – sexy, chic and very, very atmospheric in the way that only Jarre knows how. As evidence of an artist who constantly strives to push himself forward and experiment, Teo & Tea gets our vote – it’s just that it probably won’t be considered as essential as some of his defining work in years to come.

Téo & Téa is a predominantly instrumental album with the occasional voiceover and (presumably) faked orgasm. It was never going to please all the Oxygene purists but that is testament to that album’s strengths rather than this one’s weaknesses. It is over 30 years since Oxygene’s release and the ease with which many of the tracks on ‘Téo & Téa’ could slip into the latest God’s Kitchen or Fabric mix CD is surely evidence of his continued relevance and success. While Jarre’s techno roots are clearly on display the album explores other genres of dance. ‘Partners in Crime 1 and 2’ feature some interesting break beat elements, ‘In the Mood for You’ has a lounge like feel to it and ‘Chatterbox’ goes for the more modern electro vibe. The single ‘Téo & Téa’ preceded the album, and was picked up by MTV Dance, but is not the only contender for its own release. The stomping, Eurodance sound of ‘Vintage’ has probably been the best received of the 13 tracks while the techno heavy ‘Téo & Téa’ 4:00am’ has also been turning heads.

FLY 2007

I thought Jean Michel Jarre was a name long gone, but not only has he ‘returned’ with a new album, but it seems that he was there all along, just nowhere where I was or would have wanted to be. Apart from all the goodwill work and a live album of hits (2004’s ‘Aero’) recorded at one of his occasional and epic concerts (in front of dwindling audience numbers no doubt), Téo and Téa represents his first album of new material since ‘Metamorphoses’ in 2000. The latter’s over-emotional trip hop/ambient clash almost seems like gold compared to where he has arrived now. Téo and Téa is nothing short of embarrassing. It bursts into life with some of the most galling Gaulish pop techno you could imagine – the kind of album you might find your pre-teenage daughter listening to. The single and title track, for example, sounds like the theme music to some cute after school adventure program or a platform game. It’s all high pitched and hysterical with short-lived changes for the attention deficient. Track three, ‘Beautiful Agony’, follows with bubblegum pink beats, squirts of synth jizz and ridiculous samples of a woman’s orgasmic moaning. Even the Happy Hooker is more listenable. ‘Touch to Remember’ is nothing of the sort, even though it slows things slow down a little, but there is nothing to merit it either musically or lyrically (the clichés are spoken by the computer simulated voice). ‘Partners in Crime 1 and 2’ are probably the only tracks you would contemplate listening again. Part one has a jazzy mood cut through with rustling rolls of break beats, while part two again utilises a trip hop palette with nice JMJ signature retro atmospherics underneath. From then on, the album heads back where it started (ending with another version of the title track) and there’s no saving it. Given that JMJ has had his moments of quality, and that he has been name-checked recently by some of the more interesting new producers, for example Redshape, you might have imagined he could have put something a bit better together than this.
